The brash, go-for-broke “Halfway Home” made for a big entrance for BSS, but the subtler give-and-take of “Thunder” feels more like a proper reacquaintance. And while the latter didn’t generate the global acclaim of others, their place shouldn’t be understated, even if it was less celebrated. “Thunder” showcases the spontaneity and communal spirit that have carried BSS from the start: every piece of the song, from Feist's discursive lyrics to the circuitous rhythm and flickers of U2-like guitar, all seem to contour around each other, moving as one without falling into lockstep. But if NYC felt like the centre of the universe, the great Canadian export of artists like Arcade Fire, Metric, Feist, The New Pornographers and Broken Social Scene challenged that assertion every step of the way.
